For a lot of Australian homes right now, yes, especially if you already have solar and the rebate takes roughly 30% off the price. But it's not automatic. Whether a battery pays for itself comes down to three things: how much spare solar you are exporting for next to nothing, how much power you use after the sun goes down, and the gap between your daytime and peak tariff rates. Here's how to tell for your home.
Two things landed at once. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which started in July 2025, knocks around 30% off the installed cost of a home battery. And a lot of Australians already have solar that spends the middle of the day exporting cheap power to the grid for a few cents a unit.
The numbers show how fast it's moved. In the June 2026 quarter alone, more than 111,000 batteries were approved under the program, worth about 3.6 GWh of storage, and applications have now passed half a million since it began (Clean Energy Regulator, Q2 2026 report). The same quarter set a rooftop solar record, with 1 GW installed in three months, beating the old record of 942 MW from late 2023. So the moment is real. The question is whether it's the moment for you.
The Cheaper Home Batteries rebate is delivered through small-scale technology certificates, the same scheme that has discounted rooftop solar for years. You don't fill in a form and wait for a cheque. Your installer factors the certificates into the quote, so it comes off the upfront price.
Two things worth knowing before you decide. First, the battery has to be paired with solar, new or existing, and the rebate covers systems up to 100 kWh of usable storage, which is far bigger than a normal home needs. Second, the discount shrinks over time. The certificate value steps down on a set schedule between now and 2030, so the same battery earns a smaller rebate each year. Waiting a year does not make batteries cheaper. It makes the government's share of the bill smaller.
A battery earns its keep by storing your cheap daytime solar and using it at night, instead of you exporting that power for five to ten cents a unit and then buying it back in the evening peak for forty cents or more.
That means a battery tends to be worth it when three things are true:
Plenty of homes are better off waiting, and a good adviser will tell you so. If you have a small solar system that barely covers your daytime use, there's not much spare energy to store. If most of your power use is during the day while you are home, you are already using your solar directly, which is the cheapest option of all. If you're on a flat tariff with a healthy feed-in rate, the gap is small, so the payback takes longer. And if you might move in the next couple of years, the payback window may not be long enough to bank the benefit.
None of that means never. It usually means fix the cheap things first. Right-size your solar, get on a tariff that rewards a battery, and revisit it.
Start with your own numbers. Look at how much you export versus how much you buy back in the evening, and check how big the gap is between what you're paid to export and what you pay at peak on your current plan. That tells you most of what you need to know before an installer is involved.
Then get more than one quote, from installers you can trust, and ask them to show their working: the battery size they are recommending, the rebate applied, and the assumptions behind any savings figure. A battery is a ten-year decision. It's worth an afternoon of homework.
